Joseph Vidal and family papers, 1797-1936 (bulk 1797-1869).

Legal documents relate to land grants or conveyances in Louisiana. The papers of Samuel Davis comprise the bulk of the collection and are largely land documents, slave bills of sale, promissory notes, bills and receipts, and items related to his banking position. Francis Surget's testamentary documents are included, as are papers related to his estate. Papers of Dr. Robert Carter primarily consist of statements of accounts, bills, and receipts. The correspondence dates largely from the 1860s. Manuscript volumes include Samuel Davis' journal, 1843-1858, with memoranda of slaves purchased; Francis Surget's journal, 1837-1856, listing slaves and property owned and given to his children; and Surget's passport book, 1838-1839.

Joseph (Jose) Vidal was secretary to Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, the Spanish Governor of the Natchez District, 1792-1797. Vidal later became commandant of the Post of Concordia, in Spanish Louisiana. Samuel Davis, Vidal's son-in-law, was a planter, banker, and land speculator in Louisiana. Davis, in possible partnership with Vidal, owned Lake, Vidalia, Pittsfield, and Mirvin plantations in Concordia Parish, Louisiana.
